North West Norfolk MP Sir Henry Bellingham has hit out at the treatment of former military personnel being investigated for alleged crimes in Northern Ireland.

Sir Henry raised the issue during Prime Minister's Questions this lunchtime, claiming the treatment of veterans and former police officers was contrary to natural justice.

He said ex-servicemen should not be "hounded" unless there was compelling new evidence of wrongdoing.

He prime minister Theresa May for her attitude to the issue, but argued the current approach was "damaging to recruitment and contrary to the Military Covenant."

Mrs May said the current focus on former soldiers and police officers in investigations by the Police Service of Northern Ireland was "disproportionate."

Veterans in West Norfolk have previously spoken of their anger at the treatment of their former colleagues.
