Following a successful campaign at the Norfolk ASA Swimming Championships in March, Top Boy and Top Girl winners are off to the British Swimming Championships next week.
West Norfolk Swimming Club members, Nathan Wells and Abbie Whiting, will be competing at the London Aquatics Centre from April 14 to 18.
This is the first time since the Olympic Trials of 2012 that the venue has hosted the British Championships, and the Olympic pool will provide a perfect setting for athletes to perform.
The first time at such a prestigious venue for both Nathan and Abbie, they will be competing alongside the best swimmers from England, Scotland and Wales, with names such as Fran Halsall, Michael Jamieson, Adam Pratt, Ben Proud, Liam Tancock, Jazz Carlin, Ruta Meilutyte and Lizzie Simmonds in attendance.
This year’s event will also double as British selection trials for World Championships in Kazan, Russia, plus the European Games in Azerbaijan and European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Nathan will be competing in the 400 metres freestyle with a qualifying time of 4:06:92, on Tuesday, April 14, and Abbie will swim on Friday, April 17 in the 50metres freestyle. Her qualifying time was 27.67 secs.
Both will be accompanied by their coach, Sarah Vanderloo, recently voted KLFM Sports Awards Coach of the Year. This is the first time that any swimmers from WNSC have qualified for this event, and both swimmers recognize that this is due to the support, dedication and training of their coach and club.
Nathan’s and Abbie’s parents would like to thank Sarah and the West Norfolk Swimming Club for the support and encouragement they are giving the swimmers as they prepare for the event.
