West Norfolk's August 2023 in review: Students receive top marks and Robbie Williams arrives at Sandringham

Reporter Lucy Carter takes a look back at some of the biggest news stories in West Norfolk in August 2023...

With summer in full swing, people enjoyed plenty of outdoor events held in the sunshine.

One of those was Lynn’s Pride event, which saw hundreds dressed in bright colours celebrate love by holding a parade through town.

The sea of colour – and signs displaying supportive and rallying messages – travelled to a party in the park at The Walks.

Organisers hailed the event as their “biggest yet” and thanked guests for supporting their message of “love, freedom and equality”.

Students across the country celebrated getting their GCSE and A-Level results, and it was no different here in West Norfolk.

In fact, many schools across the borough celebrated results being above the national average, with many A-Level students gaining places at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

King Edward VII Academy student Alina Ahsan was one of those students, and as well as gaining a place at Oxford, also scooped up the Gold Medal Award received from the King at an in-person awards ceremony.

For many A-Level students, these were the first set of exams taken since their Year 6 SATS, because of the Covid pandemic.

Bikes and scooters filled the Tuesday Market Place as Mods and Rockers came together for their annual meet-up.

More than 100 bikes were present and were accompanied by live bands that played throughout the day.

The event was organised by West Norfolk Council, who also organise the annual Mini Meet for vehicle enthusiasts.

And finally, we couldn’t go through August without mentioning Robbie Williams, who attracted huge crowds when he performed at Sandringham.

Organised by Heritage Live, crowds enjoyed Irish singer Van Morrison on the Friday – supported by Squeeze and Del Amitri – before Robbie took over the stage on the Saturday and Sunday.

Robbie was joined by former Take That bandmate Mark Owen on Saturday and Lucy Spraggan on Sunday.
