What a Knight: Terrington pupil Harry scoops award

Have your say

The YMCA Junior Badminton club run by Badminton England level 2 coach Janis Baker finished their season with a fun session.

The younger children, aged between 6 and 12 years, played games like “throwmington”, pirates, “catchington”, round robin and more, with plenty of prizes on offer.

The older high school children in the teenage club played singles and doubles with fun activities throughout the evening.

The clubs run every Tuesday at King Edward V11 School from September to the end of April. Baker then encourages some of the older, more experienced, juniors to stay onto the adult pay and play club that takes place straight after the junior sessions, with many of the children playing some good standard badminton.

Next season Baker intends to put a ladies team in the Ouse Valley Badminton League to give some of the teenage girls some competitive experience.

Baker and her volunteer helpers Gary Hellard and Annette Yallop, in conjunction with teenage volunteers Nathan Brown, Harry Knight, Zak Robinson and Bayley Shaw, chose the younger Player of the Season based on attendance, attitude towards learning and improvement over the 2014/15 season, which went to six-year-old Josh Harvey.

The winner of the older group Player of the Season was Knight, 15, from Terrington High School.

The new badminton season will start again on Tuesday, September 8. For more information visit www.janis baker.co.uk
