Swaffham woman in court for smashing ex-mother-in-law’s hippo ornament and mobile phone
A Swaffham woman smashed a hippo ornament and a mobile phone belonging to her ex-partner’s mother.
The woman, aged in her 20s, appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where she admitted causing criminal damage and using threatening words to cause alarm or distress.
Prosecutor Abdul Khan said that on August 30, the woman visited her ex-partner’s mother’s property in Swaffham, where an argument broke out.
It was during this argument that she smashed a large hippo ornament and grabbed her ex-mother-in-law’s mobile phone, which was hanging from her neck, and threw it on the floor.
In mitigation, duty solicitor George Sorrell said that the woman’s former partner owed her around £300 - while she felt that he and his mother were mocking her during the visit.
The solicitor explained that her ex-partner is currently on bail for domestic matters relating to the defendant.
The Lynn News is not naming her due to these ongoing legal proceedings.
“I’m not offering that as a defence for her actions. She knows she has to behave differently in these types of situations,” Mr Sorrell said.
He urged magistrates to “put her on trust to the court” and suggested a conditional discharge would be an appropriate sentence.
Magistrates ordered that the woman pays a £26 victim surcharge, and did hand her a 12-month conditional discharge.
