Builders move in to expand King's Lynn school

Building work to expand facilities at a Lynn primary school has begun this week.

Contractors have moved onto the site of the Highgate Infant School, on Gaywood Road, to start the construction of an extension, which is intended to provide both new teaching and office space.

And officials say they hope the work will make a “visual statement” and improve the appearance of the building.

The project is going ahead after West Norfolk Council granted planning permission for the work in June.

Documents submitted in the application said it was intended to”replace a decaying temporary structure which has outlived its service life.”

It also argued that the project would enhance school hours security and provide a larger, covered activity area.

It continued: “The new extension provides a teaching resource space, reception and administration office.

“In addition the covered link currently between the original school and removed extension is to be extended.”

The school is one of seven in West Norfolk which are sponsored by the KWEST Academy Trust, based at the King’s Lynn Innovation Centre (KLIC).

The documents said the trust leases the school site from Norfolk County Council.

However, the application was referred to the borough council for a decision as the county authority did not provide any funding.

KWEST has been asked to comment on the work.
