Family of Matthew Day pay tribute to him as ‘devoted son, brother and father’ who died in A10 crash at Southery last year

The family of a man who died in a crash on the A10 a year ago have paid tribute to him as “devoted son, brother and father”.

Relatives of Matthew Michael Day have issued the tribute to mark the one-year anniversary of his death in the collision between his Yamaha motorbike and a car at Southery on August 26, 2022.

US servicewoman Mikayla Hayes, 24, of Snowdrop Drive, Downham, was charged with causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and will face a trial later in the year.

Matthew’s family said: “It is a year ago since we lost you.

“A loving character who could make friends wherever he went. A devoted son, brother, devoted father to his daughter and partner.

“A motorcyclist who loved his bike and would take pride in taking care of it.

“For all who knew him and spent time in his life, we are all lucky to have had someone like Matthew in our lives.

"Unfortunately, we only have pictures, videos and memories left of you Matthew, but we can assure you, you will not be forgotten.

“Your daughter will grow up knowing she had a wonderful daddy, who is looking down on her and keeping her safe.

“We know you will not be coming back and are awaiting the trial in December. We all love you Matthew.”

Hayes, who had been travelling from RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk to her home in Downham, had requested a trial in a US military court but was overruled by a UK judge at an earlier hearing.

She appeared at Norwich Crown Court in December 2022 where she entered a plea of not guilty and was bailed until her next court appearance scheduled for December 11, 2023.

Her barrister had argued that she was on duty at the time of the collision, but deputy senior district judge Tan Ikram ruled at Westminster Magistrates’ Court that Hayes “was simply travelling home after a day at work”.
