The Conservative ire at the church’s take on the Government plan to force jobless young people to do unpaid work of a nature normally allotted to people convicted of crime is intriguing and offensive to some, myself included.

Obviously part of the continued attack on resources available at the poor end of society, I would suggest that the current descriptive quote by the Prime Minister of the concept as “Work brings dignity”, when coupled with the enforcement element of the exercise, is sliding dangerously towards a former edict on the same lines, “Work Brings Freedom”.

This was a sinister philosophy that older people would have hoped had gone forever.
