With reference to the letter from D Wilkes regarding the Spitfire trail,
I do not think he is just old-fashioned, he is also misguided, misinformed and disrespectful. First, the Spitfires are a tribute, albeit a modern one, to the supremely courageous young men who fought and died while serving our country. Second, each Spitfire was purchased by a generous sponsor with the money going to the RAF Benevolent Fund. Finally the neon pink one he refers to was sponsored by a close friend of mine and given to my family to decorate in memory of my granddaughter, Chloe, who lost her ‘battle’ with life in February. Chloe was 17 months old and had fought as courageously as anyone I know or know of from her birth to her death. Pink was her favourite colour and the plane is also decorated with the Downs Awareness colours and logos to help raise awareness for this very worthwhile charity.
D. Wilkes should get the facts right and remember to respect the living and the dead.
