I’m sorry to hear that WJ Blundell is planning to leave us.
I shall miss his thoughtful contributions to our discussions. But WJ does puzzle me. He says nothing happens here. But if the peace of WJ’s garden was ruined almost every weekend in the summer by a raucous racket emanating from the bandstand as mine is, he might feel differently. Anyway, what does WJ want by way of activity? As someone whose main recreation is sitting down, I’m astonished by what’s on offer. There’s shopping at Tesco’s; chatting in Sainsbury’s; eating fish and chips; feeding the seagulls; visiting the surgery (becoming a rarer treat); not to mention sporty things like bowls, golf etc. My! We are positively the Las Vegas of the East Coast! I suspect that when he sips coffee outside a Paris caff, looks out from his balcony along the Grand Canal, or shops for the latest smart phone in the Shinjuku district, good old WJ will recall the plastic striped awning at The Spinney with a small tear of nostalgic regret.
