Have your say

A response to Big Eye, October 13. Commenting on the lamentable state of the popular press he writes: “… by the time I’d cut out the plethora of adverts, too, there was precious little else holding the pages together.”

I paraphrase a previous Lord Rothermere, proprietor of the Daily Mail: “I decide what the news is, all the rest is just advertising.”

The Daily Mail is, of course, a bastion of democracy and dare I say “British Values”, something we hear so much about these days. The Mail’s current owner is Harold Jonathan Esmond Vere Harmsworth, yes, another Viscount Harmsworth.

This upstanding citizen enjoys non-domicile status. He pays no income tax, no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax. What is truly odd is that he lives in Britain and the Mail itself is based in Kensington, in the affluent heart of our great capital.

The Mail, of course, echoes Tory views and, sadly, influences millions of Britons who mostly remain blissfully unaware of the reality of political influence in Britain. Our state would be better governed if the “Old Joes” that Big Eye writes about asked more questions of those who claim to inform us.
