Am I your only reader to feel thoroughly fed up with the ongoing petty cavilling at the Brexit referendum result from various of your correspondents?
People seem to have forgotten that the original 1975 referendum “In” campaign was based on the most whopping lie of all – namely, that there were no plans for further European integration beyond what was then the Economic Community and that if any materialised, the UK would successfully be able to veto them. Indeed, it is precisely the accumulated resentment of 40 years at the lies perpetrated in the original referendum that has fuelled discontent with the current arrangements and resulted, not before time and quite rightly in my view, in a reversal of the original 1975 result.
Let us have no more, please, of whinging at the referendum result. Challenge the decision with policy-based argumentation, by all means, but for heaven’s sake, let us drop the resort to moaning about “lies”.
