Have your say

I believe that a brief reply to the letter from David Holmes last Friday is in order.

The letter displays ignorance of both the Bible and history. The writer obviously does not understand the Bible as the written source of the church’s authority. Throughout the Bible there are calls for justice and fair treatment of the poor and dispossessed. It would take far too much space to quote even a few of the many verses that require special attention to be paid to those who are so easily marginalised in our society. ‘Loose the bonds of injustice ... bring the homeless poor into your house ... let the oppressed go free...’ are just three examples from three verses in Isaiah. There are hundreds more. Please Mr Holmes; go back and read your Bible carefully! In the New Testament letter of James we are told that religion acceptable to God requires us “to look after orphans and widows in their distress”.
