Shane Akers saw red late in the game as 15th-place Fakenham Town lost 5-1 at Hadleigh United in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.

The Ghosts had a torrid first half, going four goals behind. As early as the fifth minute, Fakenham lost possession of the ball and Hadleigh scored their first.

The hosts’ second came from a 22nd-minute corner and they added a third three minutes later.

Hadleigh made it 4-0 from a free-kick six minutes before half-time.

The Ghosts restored a measure of respectability a minute after the break. Some superb work from Jack Guyton allowed Karol Wengrzik to pick up the loose ball and fire it into the back of the home net.

However, almost straight away in the 47th minute Hadleigh scored their fifth, as ‘keeper Tom Coombe was lobbed.

Akers, who had come on as a substitute for Matty Grand just after the hour mark, received a straight red card in the 88th minute.

Next Saturday in the FA Cup, Fakenham entertain Isthmian League North Division side Bury Town.

In the Thurlow Nunn League First Division North, Downham Town dropped their first points of the season when the visitors secured a 2-2 draw at mid-table Norwich CBS.

It was more of a case of two points dropped as the Memorial Field side frustratingly conceded twice in the final minutes.

Goals came from Emmanuel Akpan and DaVillian Katabana.

Downham remain in the play-off places in fourth position.
