King’s Lynn centre plays host to badminton and table tennis tournaments

The Alive Lynnsport Ladies Badminton club began back in 2002 and now has more than 20 members.

Ladies vary from their 40s to those aged over 80, who own the court just as much as their younger teammates.

Before Christmas, the group held their annual tournament with 14 ladies taking part.

Runners-up were Sandra Hunt and Sandra Lott and the winners were Linda Watkinson and Janet Atkins.

Julie Jones started up the ladies’ club back in 2002 with Norma Bowen, and Jones said, “We started up the club all those years ago just for women, so they could feel relaxed and welcome to come along and enjoy the sport whatever their level.

"It’s not just about badminton, we also socialise after the game with a free hot drink and quite a few of us go out socially too.

"We have made such good friendships throughout the years, and it’s great to be doing something active and healthy, plus it’s great for your mental health too.

"We have had some new ladies join recently, which is fantastic and the club is going from strength to strength."

Ladies Badminton runs every Monday morning 9.30-11.30am and new members are always welcome.

In the same week, was the Women’s Wednesdays Christmas tournament.

Sixteen ladies took part with names drawn out of the hat for their partners, playing seven games of table tennis each.

The runners-up were Tove Harper and Teresa Taylor, and the winners, not losing a single game, were Cheryl Setchell and Norma Bowen.

Women’s Wednesday runs every week and you can choose to play badminton, short tennis or table tennis, we look forward to welcoming new members.

Janis Baker, a National Level 2 Coach, leads all these sessions and is always happy to provide coaching assistance if required. Baker has more than 30 years of experience coaching badminton in West Norfolk.

She started playing as a junior back in the early 80s and represented Norfolk as a junior and senior and Alive Lynnsport is proud to have her teaching at their centre.
