Downham’s motorsport siblings Elliot and Scott Ryan travelled to the penultimate round of the 2015 MAXXIS British Sidecarcross Championships at the popular Little Loveney Hall circuit near Wakes Colne, Essex.

The event attracted nearly 30 of the country’s top sidecar crews. There had been a summer break of nearly four weeks since the last round.

In the intervening gap Elliot (the pilot of the outfit) got married and found out that he had ridden two rounds with a double fracture of a bone in his right arm.

This was probably sustained in one of the two racing “incidents” that the brothers were involved in at Milton back in June.

Having only been medically approved to race on the Wednesday before, it was touch and go as to whether he would be “race fit”.

The Halstead club had put a lot of hard work preparing the track considering the rainfall during the week.

The result was a nice deep top surface that would go some way to cushioning the effects of racing for the #29 Honda powered outfit. This was a large circuit littered with many jumps and tight corners.

The Ryans entered the qualifying laps hoping to get a good start gate which would enable them to continue with their accumulation of Championship points, however halfway through the session it was evident that Elliot’s arm was probably just not strong enough for the job.

On arrival back at the pits it was evident Elliot was in an increasing amount of discomfort, so a decision was made to no longer continue.

It was a brave attempt but the unforgiving nature of the track, with its many twists and jumps meant it was a “bridge too far”.

The final round of the Championship will take place at the prestigious Canada Heights venue in Kent on October 4.
