Ryston Runners celebrate latest milestone in Cross Country Grand Prix Series

The third race in the 2019/20 Ryston Runners Cross Country Grand Prix Series on Sunday was always going to be special in Shouldham Warren.

It was not only the second race in the new Athletics Norfolk XC Series, but also the 200th running of these races.

Since the first race in October 1986, there have been six races a year, with only one cancellation, in March 2001, due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak.

It was fitting, therefore that a Ryston member should be the outright winner of Sunday’s senior 6.5k race, Callum Stanforth doing the honours, finishing a minute ahead of the current club chairman, Robert Simmonds.

Simmonds was one of half a dozen members who had completed 100 of the races over the years, the others being his father, Martin, and brother, Andrew, plus race director Andy Smith, tea tent supremo Liz Blakie, and long-standing member Christopher Milnes.

Milnes was third in the M60 category with clubmate Kevin Howlett in second.

Howlett, himself, features in the race history stats as the patriarch of a family of which three generations have now participated, others including the Simmonds, the Smiths, the Hipkin/Wakefields, and the Howards.

Of the latter, though Adam is currently recovering from surgery, young Aiden flew the flag at the 200th event by finishing second in the under-9 race, itself won by a third generation Simmonds, namely Andrew’s son, Thomas.

Archie Rowe, third in the U11B was the only other Ryston junior to take a category award, before the rest of the competitors, U17 and above, embarked on the 6.5k course, with the following also making the top three in their categories:
