King's Lynn heat leader won't let rider departures distract him in the Premiership
Craig Cook won’t let the absence of fellow heat leaders Robert Lambert and Erik Riss this season distract him from his job of scoring precious points for King’s Lynn Stars.
The Great Britain speedway racer, who is expected to return to Lynn in 2021, says he will be there for whoever his Adrian Flux Arena team-mates prove to be.
Both German ace Riss and Norfolk rider Lambert miss out on the UK in 2021 owing to a combination of Polish league rules, international commitments and continued uncertainty regarding the coronavirus outbreak leading up to winter.
Cook is just concentrating on his own Premiership role, saying: “I don’t know yet who they will bring in as replacements.
“At the end of the day, I’ve got my job to do. I’m always there to offer help for anyone in my team. I hope they will get suitable replacements. We will see what happens.”
Cook also said regarding Norwich-born Lambert: “It’s a big year for him. He did fantastically last year. Now he has got to concentrate on his own career if it helps him move forward.
“I don’t think anyone will hold it against him that he has made that decision. I think that it is the correct decision.”
Lambert has so many balls to juggle in the air with Grand Prix, Great Britain and continental league commitments, and former GP rider Cook has first hand knowledge of how tough it is to regain the initiative if things go wrong.
With distinguished spells at clubs including Peterborough, Edinburgh, Belle Vue and Glasgow, Cook remarked: “If things don’t work out at the start of the year with so many things going on it would have been difficult to get the ball rolling again.
“There is little time to reflect or to get an opportunity to do some testing between meetings, or even to relax.”
The Cumbrian added: “It’s a great opportunity in front of him and he has got all the talent in the world. “
“It’s a great package he has got and he is capable of doing anything.”
