West Norfolk athletes in medal spree at County Championships
The opening day of the Norfolk County Athletics Championships took place at UEA SportsPark,in Norwich, last Sunday with success for West Norfolk athletes across the age groups.
Brothers Alfie and Charlie Williams were in fantastic form once again, showing their continued dominance in the throws.
Alfie won gold set a new club record and broke a County Championship record that had stood since 1985 with 14.40m throw in the shot put.
Brother Charlie Williams won silver in with a season’s best of 11.47m in the same event.
The roles were reversed in the discus with Charlie winning gold and setting a new club record with a 39.65m throw with Alfie taking the silver medal with 36.58m.
Under-13 girl Mia Lesniak claimed discus gold with a 19.03m personal throw, setting a new club record.
Lesniak also ran in 100m (heat one), finishing seventh in 15.7sec, and in the long jump finished seventh with 3.49m leap.
Personal best performances were achieved in all three events.
Mia’s brother, Under-11 Harrison Lesniak won bronze in the 80m flat race In 13.3sec and in the 600m came seventh in 2m18.0sec.
Under-11 girl Myley Gilboy also ran in the 80m flat race, finishing just outside the medals in 12.4sec.
Sisters Lily and Lucy Edwards were both crowned County champions.
U20s (T20/F20) athlete Lily won double gold with a 2.35m in the long jump and in the shot with 3.80m- a season’s best performance.
Elder sister and senior women’s athlete Lucy won long jump gold with a 4.59m leap and silver in the 100m in 14.4sec.
The triple threat of athletes in the Under-13 boys age group did not disappoint as they battled to achieve medals with continued success.
Charlie Broad won long jump gold, equalling his personal best with a 4.39m leap, and claimed javelin silver with a 25.97m, and also a personal best.
Marcus Wood won shot put gold with a personal best throw of 8.23m.
Kai Peggs won 100m bronze with a 14.8sec run, equalling his personal best, and also finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 3.78m.
Senior man (T20/F20) Cameron Ross won long jump gold with 4.32m leap and 100m silver in 13.8sec – a season’s best run.
Under-15 boy Thomas O’Neill won javelin silver with a 26.76m throw and came eighth overall after finishing third in his 800m time trial in 2.m28.4sec.
O’Neill was also third in heat three of the 100m in 13.2sec.
Senior man Jack Pishorn won silver in the discus with a 17.55m throw.
Under-15 girl Emma Broad – sister of Charlie Broad – didn’t win a medal but did pull out a Personal best performance in all three of her events.
Athletes who train or a linked with the club also did well.
Veteran (V50) Micheal Protheroe, of Dereham AC, won gold with a 8.46m shot put and his son Nathan Protheroe, from City of Norwich, won senior men’s gold in the long jump with 6.21m.
Under-17 girl Lucy Oakley, of Norwich AC, won gold in the shot put with a season’s best of 11.55m.
Well done to all the event organisers. all the officials, volunteers and athletes who went overboard to make this event able to take place.
