Fakenham hosts Snellings Norfolk National Race Day

The Snellings Norfolk National Race Day is fast becoming a firm favourite with Fakenham racegoers.

Missing from last year’s schedule due to Covid, the 2022 Chase over a testing 3 miles and 5 furlongs made up for lost time by producing a cracking encounter in a competitive field of ten runners vying for prize money of £25,000.

There were three virtually in line coming to the last but it was course favourite Tommie Beau, under Michael Nolan riding for trainer Seamus Mullins, who prevailed.

Seeking his third win at the track, the seven-year-old took full advantage of the short run-in to get home by two and a half lengths from Red Happy ridden by Philip Armson.

Third place went to Havana Hermano under Ciaran Gethings riding for Stuart Edmunds, a combination which had won this race in 2019.

Popular trainer Olly Murphy, who has always done well at Fakenham, won the opening Selling Hurdle over two miles thanks to a fine ride by Lewis Stones on favourite Hey Bob.

They never relinquished the lead from their seven rivals showing a fine turn of foot from the last to win going away from second-placed Balleticon ridden by David Bass. The ten-year-old gelding was sold at auction for £5,000.

Ajay’s Ways, ridden by Kielan Woods for Fergal O’ Brien, triumphed in the 100% Racing Profits Back Into Racing Chase over 2 miles and 5 furlongs.

Always handily placed the pairing took control over the final half-mile to win by a comfortable 12 lengths from Dubai Guest.

The Snellings Maiden Hurdle over 2 miles and 4 furlongs turned into a tussle between the two horses at the top of the market.

They dominated the field of six but over the final half-mile Rathmacknee, ridden by Nico de Boinville for Nicky Henderson, threw down a challenge to his rival High Tech under Sam Twiston-Davies riding for Dr Richard Newland.

There was no answer to this move from the front with the winner going further away for an easy triumph.

Favourite Whatashock, ridden by Harry Skelton for his brother Dan, won the Watch Fakenham On Racing TV Hurdle, also over 2 miles and 4 furlongs.

This was a more competitive affair with Cloudy Wednesday and Cobbs Corner putting up a good fight before conceding, the winner prevailing by three lengths.

The day’s racing was completed with the Turner Trophy ‘Grassroots’ Hunters’ Chase over 3 miles.

There was little between the main rivals in the first two miles but when General Arrow, ridden by Miss Gina Andrews, ran out of steam, favourite Normofthenorth under Miss Izzie Marshall took charge to win well from second-placed Socialiser ridden by Mr Tristan Durrell.

The final meeting at Fakenham before the summer break will be Jarrold Ladies' Day on Sunday, May 22, the first race due off at 1.50pm.
