Ryston Runner Reynolds busts Lincoln 10K 40-minute mark

The reorganised Lincoln 10K featured the greatest number of Ryston Runners AC weekend participants.

The original event was postponed due to snow, and now the re-run experienced temperatures in the mid to high 20s.

Gavin Reynolds was the first “Hare” home, and the only one to break 40 minutes, placing 86th in 39:28.

Oliver Foxwell was next back in 40:50, with his brother Ben nursing the remnants of an ankle injury. He finished 235th in 44:15, with Richard Watson just one place behind him in 44:19.

Just 10 seconds later the biggest smile belonged to Matt Hitchcock who smashed his PB by well over a minute, recording 44:29 for 277th place. This was Matt’s second 10K in two days as he had competed at Holkham on the Saturday and clocked 46:49, over tougher terrain. Martin Heeley finished 10 seconds behind Matt at Lincoln, clocking 44:39 for 286th.

Tony Savage ran a cautious 47:03 for 476th place, relieved there was no steep hill climb to the finish. Making her debut in a Ryston vest, Emma Wilding ran 61:18, finishing in 1,904th place, and Ivan Nunn completed the Ryston contingent in 2,658th with 67:39.

At least 2.5 miles of the East Harling 10K designated “road race” was actually over forest trails. Lorena Latisaite got her hands on the trophy for 3rd Senior Woman, running 42:48, while Jane Ashby took home the spoils from the W65 category with 54:14. Jeff Reed (M70), returning cautiously after a few medical issues, clocked 59:57.

At the Newmarket 10K Eamonn McCusker clocked 50:21 over the undulating terrain to finish 73rd out of 231, and yet again thwarted by there being only an M60+ category so still unable to cash in on having had yet another significant birthday.

Peter Duhig likewise found himself running against “mere” 60 year olds in the 2nd Carrera Popular in Guadalupe, Murcia, on Friday, eventually finishing 10th in that category and 186th overall over a two-lap 7.2K course which he covered in 39:36. Cath Duhig racewalked to 223rd place out of the 233 finishers, and took the W60 honours with a time of 46:29.

Ryston stalwart Jeremy Navrady completed the Outlaw Half Triathlon at Holkham on Sunday, his debut attempt at such an event.

On Saturday Ryston Juniors and Seniors took part in the Eastern AA Track and Field Championships in Peterborough, coming away with five golds, two club records, PBs, and, for one athlete, a new championship best performance.

The CBP was achieved by Lucy Oakley who threw the shot 9.57 metres to take the U13G gold, also improving her Ryston club record. She also ran 15.05 secs in the 100m.

David MacQueen had a fantastic day in the U13B, coming away with one gold and two silvers. He leapt 4.74m in the long jump to take gold.

In the 100m he improved his own PB and club record to take 100m silver with 12.85 secs and becoming the first Ryston Under 13 athlete to dip under 13 seconds. He also improved his 200m PB by 0.3 secs to 27.04 secs.

The other golds came in the Senior Men’s age group. Gareth Hunt took gold in the high jump and long jump, equalling his season’s best in long with 5.88m. James O’Neill took gold in the 3000m and silver in the 800m.

Mia Moore (U15G) took over half a second off her 200m PB, with a time of 28.45m. Robert MacQueen (U17M) was just off his PBs in the 100m (11.83 secs) and 200m (23.99 secs).

Archie Bell (U17M) threw over 30 metres in discus and 9 metres in shot. Liam Clare (U15B) ran 13.83 secs in the 100m, which was very close to his PB.

Ryston’s more senior athletes were due on the Peterborough track on Monday evening in the third match of their EMAC T&F League campaign, in which the women’s team is assured of qualifying for the final, but the men’s team’s fate hangs in the balance as there is a fine margin separating the first three teams in their division.
