Downham Stow are thwarted by the weather

Newly-merged Downham Stow CC were one of many clubs to have their games cut short by rain at the weekend.

There was just enough time on Saturday between the stormy weather to get in 16 overs, which was more than ample for Benjamin Wilcox to smash an undefeated 79 against visitors Cromer.

He gained support from Keith Thomson, who was caught for 18, in an opening stand of 54 for the home side.

Wilcox continued to dominate the scoring in tandem with William Denny (also caught, for 7) and Otto Esse (not out 7) before rain stopped play at 120-2.

The two sides gain two points each for an abandoned match in Norfolk Cricket Board summer competition Group One.

This puts Downham Stow in third spot on four points from three matches.

A divinely-inspired Charlie Golding unbeaten fifty ensured Boughton won a friendly at Jesus College, Cambridge after chasing a declaration target of 152 to win on Sunday.

Golding retired not out on 52 which came off just 40 balls and contained 11 fours at The Close. The opening bat also figured in two big, solid stands with Andrew Lee and James Barratt which meant the first wicket did not fall until 119 runs were on the board.

Their innings stuttered as well, to 140-5, but cameos from Johnny Jenkins (15, hitting a four and six), George Webb and J Webb brought Boughton home with nearly six overs to spare.

This gives Boughton a 100 per cent hat-trick of friendly successes since cricket returned from lockdown.

Earlier, Boughton's bowlers had caused a Jesus College collapse from 116-1 to prevent a push for a bigger home total. Matthew Mills and George Webb led the way with two wickets each.

Gooderstone squeezed out home team Mundford 2nds in a high-scoring match by two runs.

Two Gooderstone players retired not out as soon as they reached fifty, with Glenn Fossey's innings encompassing 73 balls while hitting nine fours.

Wicketkeeper Daniel Bowman walloped six boundaries and two sixes from just 33 balls on Saturday.

Gooderstone were dismissed for 213 and tight bowling from the likes of Andrew Boughen and Mark Chalkley helped to win the game.

Jacob Lockheart’s unbeaten 90 helped North Runcton defeat Downham Stow in a T20 contest by 34 runs on Sunday.

Sam Leishman bowled two maiden overs as well as being at the crease for the North Runcton Under 15s' winning runs at their Downham Stow counterparts.

Swaffham Seconds managed to beat the weather with a shortened 30 overs per side friendly on Saturday.

The visitors chased North Elmham 2nds' target of 222-6 in which three players shared the six scalps.

Following a quickfire 17 by opener Chris Upton, Swaffham declined to 79-4, but a fifth-wicket stand of 66 between Tony Exley and Ian Walsh gave them a chance.

Despite a succession of promising scores, highlighted by Exley's 49 off 31 balls with four boundaries and three sixes, Swaffham fell short.
