King's Lynn venue plays host to 'epic' evening of racing
The word “epic” can be overused to describe many sporting events but no other superlative comes close to describe the Pre-1990 unlimited banger testimonial event which took place for Maarten Steenbekkers at Lynn on Saturday.
Social media has been flooded with comments following the incredible event which many have described as the best banger racing event to have taken place anywhere over the past 20 years.
From the drop of the green flag in heat one until the chequered flag fell in the destruction derby there was non-stop action which personified the career of Steenbekkers who was competing in his final-ever event.
A number of West Norfolk drivers were in action in the shape of Kieran Bowman, Sam Coote, Darren Fendley in the unlimited bangers whilst Jake Banwell was in action in the 1300 stock cars.
Bowman pulled out all of the stops with his amazing car which was one of the top cars of the day – an incredible Mk 10 Cadillac Hearse which really looked the part.
As you would expect Bowman used the car superbly and picked up plenty of entertainer points as he bids to reel in Taylor Pratchett.
Whilst going on his way destroying the opposition Bowman also managed a fantastic third place finish in the final.
Sam Coote was also heavily involved in the action and picked up an entertainer award for a big shot on Joe Geeves, while Fendley picked up some good places throughout the day.
It was a disappointing day in the 1300 stock cars for Banwell who was involved in the action more than he would have liked including going for a ride wild round the wall.
It was difficult for the top men to make progress from the back of the grid with a lower turnout than normal with the 1300s being a late addition to the meeting and also no stoppages through the night and Jake only had an eighth place finish in the all comers to show for his efforts.
Racing at Lynn returns on Saturday, July 30, with the 2L banger world final and 2L stock cars.
