King's Lynn goalkeeper called up for England training camp

A talented teenage goalkeeper is dreaming big after being called up for an England training camp.

Amber Locker, from West Winch, is off to St George’s Park at the end of next week to meet up with the England Under-16s squad.

Her selection comes on the back of some fine performances between the posts for Holly Meadows Under-14s and the academy at Norwich City.

Reflecting on her selection, a thrilled Amber, 14, said: “To be selected for the squad is a dream come true.

“I’ve worked so hard to get to this and football at any level is tough with selection process so this has been so nerve racking.

“The next step is to go to St George’s Park on camp and get to know other Under-16 squad members, hopefully some familiar faces from previous camps, then just wait for my fixtures.

“The ambition for me is simple to play football as much as possible for as long as possible at the highest level.

“To see my family in the crowd of thousands whilst I’m representing my country is what my ultimate goal is.”

Amber’s parents have differing views on her main strengths between the posts but the youngster, who spends the majority of her time in the gym or out on the football pitch, has taken her elevation in the game in her stride.

“My main strengths I think are shot stopping and being able to pre-empt what’s in front of me in the game. Mum says it’s my loud voice, dad says it’s my positioning.”

The King’s Lynn Academy pupil started her football career with West Winch, but made the switch to Holly Meadows after the team folded.

She was recommended to the Norwich City Academy when she played at King’s Lynn Elite under the guidance of Joe Simpson.

Representatives from the England set-up have been running the rule over Amber for a number of months, which also led to her attending a camp last season.

Her playing idol is Manchester United and England goalkeeper Mary Earps who enjoyed an inspired tournament on the way to glory at this year’s Euros.

“Mary Earps is my idol and being able to watch her in the Women’s Euros was a privilege,” admitted Amber.

“To play at her standard would be a dream, but as much as I look up to her I don’t model my game on her.

“I believe being my own player with my own quirks and individual skills is important. It’s what makes you stand out.”

Amber, who underwent a medical at Harley Street last month, has a simple message to any youngsters looking to make their mark in the game.

“I’ve been asked a lot what would I say to young girls starting out maybe in grassroots, but for me this has never been about gender or ability within my gender,” she said.

“So to any girl or boy I would say if you really want it and you train hard daily and condition yourself to be the best you can even in a town as small as Lynn you do get noticed, so stay focused and train hard.”
