Fakenham Town reduced to ten men as they suffer FA Vase exit to Newport Pagnell
Newport Pagnell 3 Fakenham Town 1
Ten-man Fakenham Town's hopes of making the fifth round of the FA Vase for the first time in their history were dashed by two goals in the opening eight minutes.
Andy Cunningham's side were never quite able to recover on their travels after their United Counties League Premier Division South hosts scored twice in the opening eight minutes at Willen Road.
Josh Hazell reduced the arrears early in the second half but, after Lewis Sturman was shown a red card for picking up a second booking late on, Newport Pagnell added a third goal deep into injury time.
The Ghosts got off to the worst possible start after five minutes when Jordan Wright blasted the Buckinghamshire outfit in front following an early corner.
Three minutes later, Fakenham were left with a mountain to climb after Danny Webb doubled the Swans' advantage.
Josh Hazell saw an effort skid off the Newport Pagnell woodwork as the visitors rallied after their difficult start.
Kieran Barnes saw his audacious chip collected by Tom Coombe and Webb saw his header crash against the crossbar as the hosts remained largely in control going into the interval.
Coombe was called upon to save from both Barnes and Jim Burnside as the Swans looked to add to their tally going into the interval.
The Ghosts needed an early goal in the second half and they got just that as Hazell scrambled the ball over the line 11 minutes after the interval.
Fakenham had one or two opportunities to find an equaliser with Jack Guyton going closest to sending the tie to a penalty shoot-out.
Sturman was shown a second yellow for a bad challenge before Mo Ahmed added a third for the Swans after punishing an error from Louis Henman-Mason.
