Russell and Callum Gill taste success during action-packed night in 1500cc bangers

It’s not very often in the world of oval racing when a father-and-son take the chequered flag in the same formula on the same night.

But West Norfolk racing fans were delighted when Russell and Callum Gill did just that in the 1500cc bangers at the Adrian Flux Arena on Saturday night.

Russell was unlucky not to take the flag in the opening heat during a fantastic night of action when he scythed his way to the front, only for son Callum to take advantage of his father’s downfall in the closing stages of the race.

Determined to regain some family pride, Russell didn’t put a wheel wrong in the second heat on route to taking the flag and just to make sure Callum knew his place, Russell just beat Callum across the line to come home before finishing second in the meeting final which was won by St Neots’ Ben Mynott.

Kieran Bowman made a fantastic defence of his Entertainer League title with a devastating performance in the two-litre bangers, which saw him return home with an entertainer award.

Bowman also came close to a race success with a runner-up finish in one of the heats.

His performance in both the two-litre and 1500cc bangers saw him end the night as joint early leader of the Entertainer League which will have pleased him.

Ashley Garrod also put in a pleasing performance in the same formula and finished the final in second place overall.

Garrod will consider himself unlucky not to have won it when he hit the front, but an error in the closing stages – in a race which was run in Monsoon conditions – saw him lose out to Horley’s Taylor Sowter.

The driver was also in action in the 1500cc bangers where he achieved a brace of top-ten finishes including an eighth place finish in the final.

Derby’s Alfie Tomlinson won the final in the junior bangers.

Dersingham’s Harry Cobb looks like he will be banging on the door of winning a red roof this year.

The youngster delivered a great performance which saw him make the rostrum in both of his heats with a second and third before he continued to pile on the points with a great sixth-place finish in the final.

Earlier in the junior bangers, Walsingham’s Robbie Dillon was also on the rostrum with a great runner-up finish in the white and yellow final.

Downham’s Eron Denney was in the middle of the action throughout the night and ended up rolling her car over and thankfully emerged unscathed.

Banger racing returns to Lynn on Saturday, March 30, where it will be the turn of the stock cars to take centre stage with the first meeting nationally for the mighty BriSCA F1 – who will stage the world final at Lynn later in the season – crown.

The two-litre stock cars and ministox will also take to the track in what promises to be another action-packed night of racing.
