Thea Howlett of Ryston Runners competed for Norfolk U13 Girls in the Southern Inter Counties Cross Country match on Saturday at the Horspath sports ground, Oxford.

Conditions were sunny but cold. The course was mostly flat but with the frost slowly melting there were various deep mud sections to contend with.

Howlett (pictured) made a good start, getting to the front of the pack of nearly 100 girls. After negotiating the first turn she was caught with another girl’s spike on her heel which tore her left shoe off. Undeterred by this, and with no time to stop, she continued, running the remaining 2,800 metres with only one shoe.

Although somewhat hampered by this, Howlett was determined to finish and went past several girls in the finish straight and finished fifth Norfolk girl and midway in the field of runners.

It took some time to thaw her foot out but she was in good spirits.
