A team from the King’s Lynn Community Football’s over 50’s Football group had success at their first competitive event, reaching the final at the Norfolk FA Walking Football Cup competition at the Football Development Centre at Bowthorpe, near Norwich.

Captained by Chris Hoddy, ‘Un-Athletico King’s Lynn’ was formed from a group of the regulars who have taken up Walking Football at Lynnsport. This form of football is fast growing across the country and is a great way for the over 50’s to keep fit, meet new friends and rediscover those long lost silky skills on the ball.

Un-Athletico far exceeded their expectations. Their first match in the Group stages saw them battle to a 3-3 draw after going 0-1 and then 1-3 down, and won their other two matches to finish top.

With no natural goalkeeper the team were going to rotate, however Mark Steele, who had taken the gloves in the second match, grew in stature and the team then won their quarter-final 4-1. In the scoring stakes Chris Hoddy, Patrick Rugg and Michael Wan were vying for the ‘Golden Boot Award’, ultimately claimed by Hoddy.

In the semi-final Un-Athletico faced the much fancied local team Norwich Yellows, in a close fought encounter, Un-Athletico scored the only goal and Steele excelled with a couple of fine saves to see them through.

The final was lost 0-3 against a very experienced team from Beccles who had won this tournament before.

After finishing second out of 13 teams ‘Un-Athletico King’s Lynn’ are already looking forward to attracting some more ‘old talent’ to come along and join the fun at Lynnsport, and they hope to go one better in their next competition.

The group get together every Monday from 12-1pm at Alive Lynnsport. For more information or to get involved in the walking football group contact
