FA Trophy first qualifying round replay
King’s Lynn Town 5
Belper Town 1

Four second half goals, including a brace from substitute Toby Hilliard gave King’s Lynn Town a more comfortable passage into the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy than had seemed likely at half-time.

The visitors began brightly with Anton Wedderburn heading against the crossbar before Lee Cooksey fired a shot straight at Linnets keeper Alex Street.

But, shortly after Lee Stevenson had shot at Belper’s Danny Haystead, the hosts, whose chairman Buster Chapman was watching on from the stands shortly after his appointment as the new chairman of the British Speedway Promoters’ Association was announced, took the lead on 20 minutes.

A fine passing move released Liam Hurst on the right wing and his cross was headed home by Lee Smith - his first goal for the club.

Belper came close to equalising seven minutes later when captain Phil Watt headed a right wing corner wide.

And the visitors deservedly levelled on 38 minutes when Evan Garnett latched onto Cooksey’s excellent through ball, rounded Street and slotted the ball home from a tight angle.

Jonathan Williams came close to putting Belper ahead shortly afterwards - so close that his assistant manager Lee Barrow celebrated on the touchline believing that he had found the net.

And it took a good Street dave to deny Garnett as the visitors from Derbyshire ended the half the stronger.

But the tie swung back Lynn’s way four minutes into the second half when Watt was adjudged to have brought down Stevenson in the box and Michael Clunan sent Haystead the wrong way from the spot.

Haydn Goddard forced Street into action shortly afterwards as Belper, and the impressive Garnett in particular, continued to threaten.

But the tie was effectively over on 65 minutes when a Liam Hurst shot from just outside the box crept past the wrong-footed Halstead.

Substitutes Dylan Edge and Toby Hilliard combined for the latter to make it four with seven minutes to play.

And Hilliard grabbed his second with virtually the last kick of the game when he cut in from the right and fired a curling shot into the far corner.

Lynn will now travel to Nantwich Town in the second qualifying round on Saturday week.
