King’s Lynn Town FC 2
Histon 2 (Histon win 5-4 on penalties)
King’s Lynn Town were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal as they threw away a two-goal advantage to crash out of the Red Insure Cup on Tuesday night.
The Linnets went out 5-4 on penalties after Dylan Edge’s first senior goal and an own goal were wiped out by Danny Rumens and Rogan McGeorge.
Histon scored all of their efforts from the spot before David Bridges saw his penalty saved by Brendan Brown.
Ryan Fryatt, Conor Marshall and Kern Miller are recuperating from injury and were not risked as Lynn made a number of changes.
Teenager Edge, who has recently signed a contract with his local club at The Walks, had the first notable opportunity of the tie.
He received a ball from Bridges but put his effort wide.
Home stopper Alex Street was tested a couple of times before Lynn’s next chance which saw Edge scoop over.
Edge made amends when he was the prime mover in Lynn taking the lead on 29 minutes. The striker was fed by a pass from Toby Hilliard and his deflected shot was slid into his own net by Jack Uttridge past helpless visiting goalkeeper Brown.
Three minutes later Lynn doubled their advantage when a bit of pinball in the area saw Hilliard’s shot hit Jack Friend and dropped to Edge inside the six-yard box, who made no mistake.
Then Friend had a shot blocked and a second attempt deflected wide.
The Stutes pulled a goal back on 63 minutes, skipper Rumens heading home from a corner by Sam Ives.
The tie was turned on its head on 72 minutes when the visitors equalised. Former Wisbech Town midfielder McGeorge made space on the edge of the home box and placed his shot into the corner.
No more goals meant the tie headed into a penalty shoot-out.
