Wisbech appoint former King's Lynn Town striker as new manager

Former King's Lynn Town player Leon Mettam has been appointed new manager of Wisbech Town.

Mettam (35) was assistant manager at Frickley Athletic last season as they were relegated from the Northern Premier League East Division to the Northern Counties East League.

He plans to make the odd substitute appearance for the Fenmen. His number two will be powerful midfielder Danny Brookes.

Mettam replaces Allan Ross, who sensationally quit last week, just three weeks before the United Counties League season starts.

Fenmen chairman Paul Brenchley said: "This is the best thing that's happened to the club for a long time.

"He has good contacts and will be able to bring decent players in."

Brenchley revealed that Mettam, who scored eight goals in 24 appearances for the Linnets, came recommended by former Lynn and Wisbech manager Gary Setchell. "Gary is convinced that Leo will give us the stability we need going forward."

In a long career, Mettam has also played for Lincoln City, Stamford, Corby Town, Gainsborough Trinity, Worksop Town, Tamworth and Skegness Town.

The Linnets announced last night that Olly Scott has agreed an extension to his contract which will see him remain at The Walks until 2024, with the club having a further years option.

Speaking about the agreement manager Tommy Widdrington said “Olly is a great example of someone who took an opportunity and has shown an excellent attitude to earn a deal.

"I’m delighted he’s agreed to extend his stay and look forward to helping him improve as a player further."
