Four-some Linnets progress in League Cup

Southern League Cup

King’s Lynn Town 4 Peterborough Sports 1

A much-changed King’s Lynn Town side inflicted a first defeat of the season on Peterborough Sports on Tuesday night.

The Linnets changed their complete starting line-up from Saturday, fielding a number of first team squad players and a number of reserves.

Lynn also handed a debut to recent signing Chris Henderson who, not only scored, but impressed throughout the 90 minutes with a busy performance.

Sports created the first real opening when a Mitch Griffiths cross from the right found Jake Newman in acres of space, but his close range effort was saved by Charlie Congreve.

The hosts put the game beyond their Evo-Stik League South Division One Centra visitors with two goals in quick succession.

In the 17th minute, a clearance from Paul Malone ricocheted off an attacking player and fell perfectly for Chris Henderson to slot home with a neat finish.

Three minutes later, the Linnets doubled their lead after a Eoin McQuaid corner from the right was headed home by Matthew Castellan.

The hard-working Nathan Stewart almost made it 3-0 just before the break after he just failed to convert a centre from Kalern Thomas.

Sports had the better of the second period, pushing Lynn, who were always a threat on the break, back for long periods of the half.

Seven minutes after the restart, Andre Williams fed in Newman who rounded the goalkeeper to reduce the arrears.

James Connell twice denied Stewart on the counter attack before Toby Hilliard smashed home a third from the edge of the box with seven minutes remaining.

The scoreline was given a rather flattering look in the final minutes when substitute Harry Baldry added a fourth thanks to a Henderson assist.

Lynn: Congreve, Thomas, Daw, Fryatt, Gilbert, Castellan, Stewart, Richards, Hilliard, Henderson, McQuaid. Subs: Baldry, Hamilton, Rudland, Collison.
