King’s Lynn Stars rider Erik Riss spoke of his ‘defeat’ and frustration as this year nothing has worked for him.

All the German racer, who aimed for double figures per meeting in seasons past but struggled to score a handful in 2021, can say is that it must be something to do with the new tyres used.

He said: “I do have an idea of what it could be. We used different tyres this year but you can’t just blame the tyres because everyone is using them and not everyone is struggling with it.

“But I think the tyres affect the riding. It affects how your engines work especially on the clay-based tracks like King’s Lynn and Peterborough.

“These are the only places where I had issues, King’s Lynn and Peterborough, and I just feel my engines are way too aggressive; I have no control.

“On the old tyres in the whole season of 2019 I never had any issues around King’s Lynn. Probably my worst meeting in 2019 was like seven points.

“This year, all year I just didn’t feel comfortable. I still can’t 100 per cent put a finger on what it is.

“I know it has to do with the tyres because that’s the only thing I’ve changed. I don’t think the tyres will change next year so I have to try and figure out how I can make it work with those tyres.”

Riss looked a pale shadow of the rider who a few years ago in Lynn colours was partnering new world team champion Robert Lambert in spearheading the Minors & Brady Stars to within a whisker of the Premiership title.

The 26-year-old added: “It’s been so tough, so tough honestly. There’s been so many times this year when I’ve felt so defeated because I’ve put in the same effort. My head hasn’t changed. I know how good I am on a bike, nothing has changed.

“Every time I stand at the tapes I’m still giving it 100 per cent. It’s just not working. I just feel so uncomfortable on the bike and I just can’t even be myself on the bike, can’t ride it hard because it’s so aggressive.

“I just feel so defeated because I’ve tried several things; like pretty much every week I try something to make it work and it just doesn’t.”
