Great Britain ladies star inspires the next generation at West Norfolk Rugby Club

The first-ever girls-only rugby event at West Norfolk Rugby Club on Tuesday, with a mixture of tag rugby games and skill zones, specifically aimed at introducing girls to this fast-growing sport.

Nine schools with 11 teams and 110 girls were greeted by West Norfolk management and coaching staff, ladies players and one of West Norfolk’s stars; Georgie Lingham, who has played Premiership Saracens and Loughborough Lighting and international 7s rugby for Team GB.

The day gave the teams a brilliant opportunity to give girls a voice and show that rugby union is a game where they belong.

Lead coach Ellen Collison said: “We want girls to have the belief and confidence that rugby is for them, supporting the girls in being active and having some fun with their mates.

Being part of a team can feel like being in a family and gives the girls strength to develop.”

The girls’ game is growing fast, and the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 is being hosted in England. Having Georgie onsite at the event was an inspiration to the girls, who got to ask her questions about her sports career to date.

Lingham also presented the girls with certificates and medals, rounding off a brilliant day of sporting fun.

“It’s awesome to see so many girls here, they are having so much fun – and there are some really quick girls here, I hope they come and join the club," said Lingham.

Throughout May, West Norfolk RUFC is taking part in the Love Rugby Campaign; England RFUs initiative to show that every girl can take part and love the game of rugby.

Covering three age groups: 9-12, 12-15 and 16–18- year-olds, training takes place at West Norfolk Rugby Club, Gatehouse Lane, North Wootton on Wednesdays between 5.30pm and 7pm.

These are free non-contact sessions open to all abilities.
