Grimston Cricket Club hosts memorial match in memory of former captain

The only thing hotter than the weather on Saturday was the cricket, as Grimston Cricket Club held their annual Family Fun Day and Mark Redhead Memorial match – played in memory of former first team captain Mark Redhead.

As children enjoyed the free bouncy castles, almost 300 adults were packed into the Grimston Cricket Ground to enjoy the community event, and watch their Grimston Legends take on the Grimston 2022 squad in a high-scoring and action-packed game.

Despite the 2022 team scoring an impressive 156 runs in their innings, the Legends showed they have lost none of the skills which made them such formidable opponents, and began to make light work of that intimidating total.

Ultimately it was only a spell of bowling brilliance which halted the batting onslaught, with 2022 captain Mark Tilbrook dismissing four batsmen in four balls to secure the Mark Redhead Memorial Trophy for the 2022 squad.

The event raised approximately £2000 in Mark’s memory, and will go towards re-laying the pitch for next season, and the establishment of a new Grimston Youth Academy – a fitting legacy for the former captain, as well as an excellent opportunity for the community to get involved in their club.

Mark’s widow Justyna Redhead agreed, saying: “Mark would be very chuffed with the turnout, he loved the club and would be so pleased to see it thriving.”
