Heacham's title-winning season has been 'extravagant', says manager

Heacham manager David Griggs has described their title winning season as “extravagant” as they prepare for a massive promotion party at Station Road tomorrow.

The Magpies secured promotion to the Thurlow Nunn League – the highest level the club has ever played at – with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Norwich CEYMS earlier this month.

It has been a historic decade for the ambitious club, climbing from Division One of the North West Norfolk League into the old Eastern Counties League.

It will be a day to remember for everyone associated with Heacham tomorrow as they welcome Beccles Town for the final home game of a historic season.

They will be presented with the Anglian Combination Premier Division trophy after the game on Saturday.

“We are very much excited,” said Griggs.

“It’s been a long old slog, but to finally wrap it up and be able to celebrate and get our hands on the trophy this weekend at home is something to look forward to.”

Griggs went on to say how he was happy the club could do so well this season, with fans now being allowed to attend following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have such a good following in away games, and at home we’ve hit around 200, which obviously makes a big difference to the lads who are playing but also financially.”

It promises to be the biggest home attendance of the season and Griggs said he is excited for a carnival atmosphere.

“I think most of the people who have come this season will be coming, plus extras and we should surpass the 200-mark and have a really good day,” he said.

“We’ve got a marquee going up, a barbeque as well so we are aiming to make it a really good day for everyone.”

Griggs was also full of admiration for the hard work off the pitch by chairman, David Page and Darren Bailey, the secretary.

A number of King’s Lynn Town supporters have also been attending Heacham games this season and Griggs puts this down to how well the club is being run.

“We believe we are running the club the right way, you need to make it affordable, enjoyable and welcoming.

“I don’t think they are getting all of those things over at The Walks, but their loss is our gain basically.”
