Barnett among 59 girls competing from across the UK
King’s Lynn Cycling Club’s Bethany Barnett took part in the weekend’s inaugural London Youth Tour which saw 59 girls competing from all over the UK.
It was four races over two days at two separate venues. Saturday was a one lap time trial followed by an hour long race in 26C sunshine, writes Phil Seaman.
Attacks every lap up the Hoggenburg hill resulted in girls dropping out with dehydration. Bethany looked very comfortable, with a strong finish in the sprint.
She was pleased to finish the day in 28th overall, with places only separated by five-tenths of a second.
Sunday saw the action move to Kent’s Cyclopark – a longer undulating course.
In a 30-minute sprint among nearly 60 riders, Bethany used her cyclocross experience to avoid several crashes. However the diversion cost her time.
A long and hot pursuit ensued, with Bethany gradually pulling herself back to the main bunch. This allowed her to contest the final sprint, with her 27th place helping to consolidate her overall GC position.
The final race of the weekend was an hour long. A fast pace from the off saw Bethany holding on for several laps. The exertions of the morning had taken their toll, and she dropped out the back of the main peloton with a group of other girls. Riding hard, Bethany’s overall GC position only slipped to 31st overall. It was great experience for her.
n The first of three 11-mile TT’s was held at the club's Grimston circuit last Wednesday evening. Most riders struggled with the head wind leading to Massingham but all 15 riders put in good times. The club record, which stood for many years, was finally broken by Matt Senter of Team Velovelocity in a time of 24.49.
The results from other KLCC riders were: Jorge Vieira 27.03, James Senter 27.30, Jamie Standen 29.10, Trevor Marshall 31.58, Simon Hardy 32.30, Gary Bowles 33.07, Sarah Hardy 39.03, Peter Barber 39.40, Pauline Sparrow 42.39, Maria Frary 43.16.
These TT rides are for anyone wishing to have a go. Just turn up on your bike which must be road worthy, with a working high intensity rear light and a helmet must be worn. The first ride is free of charge. The club’s liability also covers riders.
