King’s Lynn Ladies record biggest result in their history
Lynn Ladies 2
Norwich City Ladies 1
Cup games are notorious for the upsets they cause, and Sunday’s clash between Lynn Ladies and Norwich City was no exception.
In what was perhaps the biggest result in their short history, Lynn Ladies, two leagues below the Canaries on the women’s circuit, defeated their FAWPL South East Division One visitors.
It was a rude return for Norwich City following a three-year absence from the competition, but nothing could be taken away from the hosts who were magnificent all over the pitch from the opening minute.
Becky Russell opened the scoring early on in the game before Tiff Forshaw added a fantastic second midway through the second half to give Lynn a two-goal cushion.
Norwich City made it a nervy last five minutes when they pulled it back to 2-1.
But King’s Lynn Town dug deep for a much-deserved win and to complete a huge upset in front of a three-figure crowd.
The final whistle brought jubilant scenes between the Lynn Ladies players as the club celebrated a memorable win.
Head coach Joe Simpson said: “Without the ball, we were absolutely outstanding, we narrowed the pitch off very quickly and pressed in good areas and made great decisions when on the counter attack.
“This is a massive day for the club and from a personal point of view, seeing the girls’ faces when that full time whistle went after all their hard work was the highlight of my coaching career to date on a match day.
“It’s a result that we won’t forget but now we must refocus and get ready for a very tough trip to Histon next week as doing well in the league is of course our priority.
“A huge thanks goes to the supporters that came out to cheer the girls on.
“It definitely made a difference with the atmosphere they brought.
“Credit to Norwich City, they are a top side with great players and made it very difficult for us as we knew they would and it was hard to get the ball down. I have huge respect for Mel and the club.”
