A range of trophies for outstanding contributions to the sport are made at presentation evening

Fakenham’s Gallow Indoor Bowls Club members, whose ages range from the teens to their eighties, celebrated their annual finals night at the weekend with many keen and closely-fought matches.

Apart from the many trophies for competition winners are a range of trophies for outstanding contributions to the sport.

Pride of place went to the ladies A team who were presented with the club’s team achievement award as this year’s Norfolk county league champions.

Edna Fickling, 86, was awarded the Vera Wright Rose Bowl. She has only recently given up competing but still cheers her team on from the sidelines.

At the other end of the age range was teenager Shannon Tucker, who won the Mervyn King under-25 trophy as the young achiever of the year alongside her brother, Joseph, who won the Morrison’s Young Achiever of the Year award.

Nationally, Daniel Seaborne played for England’s under-25 team and Daniel Cawthorne was a travelling reserve. Father-and-son, Mervyn and Sam King, who won the National Family Pairs last year, were unable to repeat that success this year.

Irene Lambert won the Negus Personality Cup in recognition of all round contribution to the club including her work as club secretary.

With more than 30 individual and team events, the rinks at the club’s headquarters were in use most winter mornings, afternoons and evenings.

Jo Ashmore won the ladies singles title and was also a member of both the ladies triples and the mixed triples winning teams.

Sam King, the men’s singles champion, was also a member of the pairs, the fours and the Evening League division one winning teams.

One new event was the introduction of an Experienced/Beginners Pairs. Club and county president Richard Andrews, said it had been introduced to help new and inexperienced members to better understand the skills of the game.

“If beginners play with each other they don’t get the knowledge they get from playing with an experienced player,” said Mr Andrews, who hopes to attract new members.
