King's Lynn Town's National League trip to Grimsby Town next week has been called off this evening.

The fixture at Blundell Park had been thrown into doubt following a Covid outbreak in the Mariners' camp, which had already accounted for their planned fixture tonight.

The decision was announced in a statement on the Grimsby website a short time ago.

It read: "Following consultations with Public Health England and the National League, Grimsby Town Football Club can confirm that due to a continuation of COVID19 cases within the first team squad, our fixtures vs. Halifax Town on 26th December and King’s Lynn Town on 28th December have now been postponed.

"These are in addition to the recent postponement of this evening’s fixture vs. Boreham Wood due to a number of positive COVID19 cases within the First Team squad, despite our prevention measures and daily lateral flow testing.

"New dates for both fixtures will be announced in due course once agreed between all parties."

New Linnets boss Tommy Widdrington will have to wait a bit longer to come up against his former club after his side's trip to Grimsby was called off.

The match would have seen new Linnets boss Tommy Widdrington face one of his former clubs, having been a member of the Grimsby squad which won promotion to what is now the Championship in 1998.

Grimsby say tickets will be valid for the new date, though refunds can be obtained.

Lynn are due to entertain Notts County at The Walks on Boxing Day, before travelling to league leaders Chesterfield on New Year's Day.

However, the Spireites have also been hit by a Covid outbreak which saw them withdraw from their FA Trophy tie with Guiseley at the weekend.

Their scheduled fixture against Notts was tonight was also postponed.
