Southend United defender signs for National League North King’s Lynn Town after having his contract cancelled by mutual consent

King's Lynn Town have completed the signing of Tom Clifford from National League Premier Southend United.

The left-sided defender, 24, is regarded as something as a dead-ball specialist and is viewed as a replacement for the recently-departed Olly Scott.

Clifford has had his contract with the Shrimpers cancelled by mutual consent.

On the arrival of Clifford, Linnets manager Mark Hughes said: “I’m delighted that we have brought Tom to the club. I've played with and coached him when he was 18 on loan at Bishops Stortford.

"Tom went on to start nearly 70 games in League Two and the National League for Southend.

"He’s a technically gifted left-footed player I’ve watched develop over the years.

"After a difficult season last year through injury and Southends positive results, Tom felt it was time for a fresh start with us and I’m sure he will be an excellent player for King’s Lynn.”

Clifford was handed his first professional contract with Southend in the summer of 2018 and made his professional debut on Boxing Day in 2018.

During his time in Essex, Clifford has spent time out on loan at Bishop’s Stortford and Concord Rangers.

He was an integral member of the 2017/18 Central League Cup Southern Section winning squad, scoring the goal at Bristol Rovers that secured a semi-final penalty shoot-out success.

Clifford said upon joining: “I’m buzzing to be here, looking forward to working with the gaffer and the squad to have a good and positive season."

Clifford will be available for Lynn's National League North opener against Hereford on Saturday, pending league approval.
