King's Lynn book home FA Cup tie against Kettering Town with Bedford Town replay success

King's Lynn Town ensured there was no FA Cup slip-up as they booked a home tie against Kettering in the Third Qualifying round next month.

Goal Omotayo's sixth goal of the season and a Josh Coulson effort just before half-time set Lynn on their way before the impressive Cameron Hargreaves wrapped matters up 20 minutes into the second half.

The 3-0 win was not always pretty to watch and not a performance which will be remembered with any great affection by the supporters - but having your name in the hat for the next round is the most important aspect at this stage of the competition.

It will be seen as a comfortable win for Lynn but it was anything but that with former boss Gary Setchell's Eagles making it extremely difficult for the visitors in the opening hour.

The Linnets made three changes to their starting line-up from Saturday's 1-1 draw against the Eagles.

Hargreaves, Jordan Ponticelli and Kyle Callan-McFadden all came into the side with Tyler Denton, and Ben Stephens dropping to the bench.

Lynn's third change saw skipper Michael Clunan – scorer of the equaliser at the weekend – ruled out through illness.

Riding high in the National League North and unbeaten in all competitions so far this season, Lynn arrived in at their lower-league hosts in confident mood.

Boss Tommy Widdrington, as expected, had his troops well drilled and primed for another battle with the returning Hargreaves adding much more energy and bite to his midfield.

There were early bookings for Lynn's Theo Widdrington and Bedford's Callum Donnelly as the replay got off to a feisty start.

But once affairs had settled down it was Bedford who carved out the first opportunity with Joe Butterworth's long range effort flying wide of Paul Jones' left post.

Lynn took the lead with their first real chance of the night after 19 minutes - and there was an element of luck about their opener.

There looked little on as Hargreaves crossed from the right, but former Linnets defender Charley Sanders lost his footing in the box and Omotayo pounced to fire his side ahead.

A case of mistaken identity saw the name of Callan-McFadden go into the book for the visitors after Aaron Jones had committed a sloppy foul on the edge of the box before Hugh Alban Jones saw his free-kick deflected behind for a corner.

Adam Crowther then came to Lynn's rescue twice in quick succession as the first half became increasingly uncomfortable for the visitors.

The young defender bravely headed a dangerous Bedford cross clear before blocking Drew Richardson's follow-up as the Eagles forced a number of corners.

Lynn needed a second goal and it duly arrived on the stroke of half-time.

Olly Scott whipped in a free-kick from the right and after the ball came back off the post, Coulson was on hand to tap home.

The Eagles continued to force the pace at the start of the second period with Jones acrobatically punching away Butterworth's early ball in.

A last-gasp tackle from Crowther denied the busy Connor Tomlinson a clear shot in the box as the Eagles continued to try to find a way back into the tie.

Joshua Barrett relieved some of the home pressure by striking the woodwork at the other end of the pitch before the same player was denied by the fingertips of Street a few minutes later.

The hosts – who gave everything in both games – were visibly tiring and Hargreaves punished them with a fizzing effort from 25 yards in the 65th minute.
