King's Lynn Ladies draw with Royston in final game of season

King’s Lynn Town Ladies gained a well earned point as they finished their ERWFL Premier Division campaign in seventh place by holding second-place Royston to a 2-2 draw.

Lynn began by pressing high and Royston found themselves very much on the back foot from the first whistle, as each attempted attack seemed to be met with the imposing presence of Steph Powell or the battling figure of Fran Peeling in the defence.

The hosts also dominated the midfield with some patient and controlled possession from Amie Ford, Alice Collins and Lily Davis.

It was Ford who opened the Linnets account early in the half with a thunderous shot into the net from the top of the penalty area.

The half continued apace with Lynn continuing to dominate play and several shots flew just wide of the mark from Jodie Hopkins, Rachel Skinner and skipper Tiff Forshaw.

After some crunching tackles from the visitors, the game began to settle and Royston’s forwards had several forays into the Linnets half.

Royston hit the bar and also found goalkeeper Ellie Prentice in sparkling form between the posts.

Lily Porter and Ford combined to feed Jodie Hopkins on the left. Her accurate cross found Tiff Forshaw to drill home a second goal.

A contentious penalty award saw Royston pull a goal back, despite the valiant effort of Prentice, and this gave the visitors impetus for the remainder of the match.

Royston began to attack in earnest against some tired looking legs on the Linnets side. The offside trap that had been so effective for Lynn was beginning to falter and this eventually led to a Royston equaliser late on.

This was a hard fought game for both sides and in retrospect a point well earned for both sides. Lynn were the better side, indeed the dominant side in the first half; Royston came into their own the second.

After the game, Linnets manager Alex Cook, who has agreed to remain in charge next season, said: “It’s been a tough season with changes mid-season, but today was a stellar performance, one we can be proud of.”
