King's Lynn Stars captaincy role excited Dersingham-based rider

Lewis Kerr revealed he knew he would captain his home town club two days before a King’s Lynn Stars Premiership derby demolition of Ipswich Witches.

On Monday, following the 57-33 triumph, the stand-in speedway skipper told the Lynn News about his Stars captaincy bow: “It was two days ago. Peter (Schroeck, team boss) gave me a call and let me know.

“I was dead excited about it. I had a couple of days to think about it and thought to myself: Do you know what? I think this might bring the best out of me.

“I don't know what it was, but something sort of boosted me even more.”

The Dersingham-based reserve rider led a memorable win at the Adrian Flux Arena against a side with one of the best away records in the league – and a side he has also ridden for.

He said: “It was a big night for me – to captain your home town in the top league in Britain against local rivals and get paid 12: it really brought the best out of me.

“I was more aggressive on the bike and made some passes – yes I really enjoyed it.”

More impressively, Lynn did it without number one rider Robert Lambert.

Kerr said: “You can't get a bigger miss than Robert Lambert. The track played into our hands.”

On his recent British Final appearance where he made the semi-final, his best-ever result, Lynn-born Kerr added: “I didn't get given much choice with gate four. Belle Vue is not a place I go particularly well at. We learned a lot that night.”

Meanwhile, Schroeck added of the derby success: "We've been criticised for not having a replacement for Robert, but there is no replacement for Robert apart from Jason Doyle and Max Fricke, but those guys aren't going to come here.

"At this time of year no-one's going to do us any favours."
