Marriott brace helps King's Lynn Town through FA Trophy test

FA Trophy third round
Alfreton Town 1
King's Lynn Town 3

An Adam Marriott brace set King's Lynn Town on their way into the last 32 of the FA Trophy this evening.

The striker struck in each half after the tie was moved to the Greenwich Avenue home of Basford United, near Nottingham, after the Impact Arena pitch failed a morning inspection.

A late Ross Barrows tap-in settled the match, and earned the Linnets a fourth round trip to Hornchurch, after a Bobby Johnson strike had given the home team hope of a comeback.

The game was the fifth meeting between the teams in league and cup in just 15 months and it was a familiar figure who gave the Linnets the lead in only the third minute.

Marriott scored in each of the four matches between the sides last term and he found the net again here after latching onto Chris Smith's through ball.

In a half of few clear chances, Sonny Carey had a free kick deflected wide, while Smith himself headed over from a Michael Clunan delivery.

At the other end, James Jones headed wide and Lynn keeper Archie Mair was nearly caught out by the wet conditions as he parried away a long-range Johnson effort just before the break.

Former Linnet Nathan Fox came on for the home side early in the second half, but would have been as sick of the sight of his former teammate as anyone else in Alfreton colours when Marriott doubled the Linnets' lead on 66 minutes, after latching on to a Kairo Mitchell pass.

Mitchell himself saw his chance of a third thwarted by Alfreton keeper George Willis soon afterwards.

And a nervy finish looked on the cards when Johnson pulled one back with a fine strike from distance on 76 minutes.

The Derbyshire club missed two good chances to test Mair from crosses soon afterwards.

Carey thought he had settled the tie when his fierce shot struck the crossbar in the closing minutes.

But the tie was over four minutes from time when Barrows tapped in on the rebound after Willis parried an initial shot.
