King's Lynn Town beat Gateshead to stay top of the National League North

Striker Adam Marriott ended a two-game goal drought to keep King's Lynn Town top of the National League North.

Marriott struck the winner and his 22nd goal of the campaign 17 minutes from time to sink a plucky Gateshead outfit at The Walks.

The three points extended Lynn's latest unbeaten run to eight league and cup matches while it also saw them keep their third successive clean sheet.

By their normal high standards, Lynn were rather pedestrian in the opening 45 minutes.

They were caught napping at the back after eight minutes and Dominic Tear forced Street into an excellent save with his body.

Marriott was wide with an effort after 14 minutes while Chris Henderson's pull-back was behind the frontman after he burst into the box seven minutes later.

It was the dangerous O'Donnell who came close to breaking the deadlock 17 minutes before the interval but his shot took a deflection and ended up in the side-netting.

On the stroke of half-time, Michael Gash's knockdown found Rory McAuley but his effort on the half-volley flew over the woodwork.

Twelve minutes into the second period, Lynn goalkeeper Alex Street pulled off a low save down to his left to thwart Josh Kayode.

It took the Linnets 66 minutes to muster their first shot on target and it came from Marriott whose low shot lacked the pace to beat Bradley James.

Home substitutes Sam Kelly and Sonny Carey both went close to nicking a goal for the Linnets who enjoyed their best spell of the match in the midway stages of the second period.

It finally arrived when Kelly played the ball through to Marriott who made no mistake with a brilliant finish from an acute angle.
