Barroway Drove’s Cochrane takes top pigeon positions

For the third week running local fanciers did well in the Fens SR Federation, writes Kevin Mason.

After Rod and Gloria Ogden had topped the Fed two weeks running, it was the turn of Barroway Drove’s Rodney Cochrane to take the top two positions plus 18th with his Wereham winners, when 11 clubs sent 2,125 birds to Salisbury.

Other positions taken were Rod and Gloria Ogden & Sons who had eight birds taking 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th and 17th with their Gaywood and Clenchwarton winners.

Clenchwarton (South) raced from Eastbourne, when eight lofts sent 122 birds. First win of the season for Dale and Neil Dennis when their bird took 3hrs 29 mins to fly 139 miles.

Result: 1, 5 Dale & Neil Dennis, 1172, 1082; 2, 3 Her Majesty the Queen, 1138, 1097: 4, 6 Peter and Dave Ellwood, 1085, 1016.

Three results for the New Lynn RPC. The first race was from Salisbury when 14 members sent 181 birds. A third win for the Mannings when their winner took 2hrs 50 mins to fly almost 150 miles. The Mannings also won the 1st pools plus the nom and Peacock and Byrne took 2nd pools.

Result: 1 Manning brothers & Son, 1543; 2 Linda Simper, 1536; 3 Timmy Simper, 1530; 4 Kim Peacock & Bernie Byrne, 1509; 5 6 Peter and Dave Ellwood, 1509 (two birds).

The above club then raced from Eastbourne the following week, when 12 members sent 127 birds and were liberated in a light NNE wind at 1130 hrs. The Manning Brothers were back at the top for the fourth time this season when their all pooler and nom bird took 3hrs 38 mins to fly 140 miles, and was their first bird from Salisbury as well.

Result: 1 Manning Brothers & Son, 1130; 2, 3 Kim Peacock and Bernie Byrne, 1125, 1117; 4 Peter and Dave Ellwood, 1107; 5 Linda Simper, 1104; 6 Timmy Simper, 1093.

The club’s third race was from Carentan in France when 10 lofts sent 96 birds and were released in a ENE wind at 1030 hrs. Another good win for Her Majesty the Queen when her 5-year-old Janssen hen bird took 6hrs 58 mins to fly 254 miles. This hen had previously won the Gaywood club this year. The Manning boys won first pools and the nom, Paul and Tina Payne and Malc Bunton won 2nd pools.

Result: 1 Her Majesty the Queen, 1069; 2 Manning brothers & Son, 1021; 3, 5, 6 Pat & Julie Royle, 1015, 991 and 979; 4 Paul & Tina Payne & Malc Bunton, 997.

Two results for the Wereham club, starting with Carentan (France) when six members sent 65 birds. Several birds went missing overnight and only four timed in. Billy Mellett had three of those, and his winner took 6hrs 58 mins to fly 244 miles.

Result: 1, 2, 4 Billy Mellett, 1027, 942 and 881; 3 Kevin & Diane Woolston, 939.

The club’s second race on the day was from Eastbourne when eight members sent 131 birds. Stoke Ferry’s Richard Dunmore had his first win in the club and took 3 hrs 31 mins to fly 127 miles.

Result: 1, 5 Richard Dunmore, 1059, 954; 2, 3 Jim & Wendy Cook & Paul King, 1052, 1011; 4 Shaun Ewing, 984; 6 Steve Ward, 909.

Clenchwarton (North) raced from Seaham Harbour when nine members sent 113 birds. The birds were released in a ESE wind at 1100 hrs. Wally and Sheila Collins had their birds on top form by taking the first three cards. Their winner took 3hrs 42 mins to fly 160 miles.

Result: 1, 2, 3 Wally and Sheila Collins, 1275, 1240 and 1237; 4 Ted and Sandra Scott, 1213; 4, 5 Peter and Scott Garwood, 1190, 1188.
