West Norfolk junior badminton member, Jessi Bateman won all three titles at the recent Norfolk Junior Badminton under 15 championships.
Twelve-year-old Jessi’s first title was the girls singles, where she was undefeated in all six matches.
The top seed, she was only taken to three ends in one match, but won all other games comfortably. Her second title was in the girls doubles with regular Norwich partner Caitlin Parfitt, with the pair easily winning all their matches.
For the boys, fellow West Norfolk player, Charlie Wakefield was unlucky to come home with two runners-up trophies, after close contests in both the singles and doubles competitions. In the singles he finished top of his box in the group stage, beating the second seed on the way.
Alfie Brown was also in this group, and he was unlucky not to win a match, despite one very close game.
Charlie’s younger brother, Harry Wakefield was the youngest competitor at just 10 and he caused an upset in the other group, beating an U15 county player for the first time. In the semi-finals Charlie won 15-8, 15-6 to reach the final, but was then defeated by top seed Bradley Smith from Norwich in a close match 8-15, 13-15.
Charlie’s second runners-up trophy came in the boys doubles, with partner George Underwood. Having won two matches easily, they played the top seeds in the decider. After the first two games were shared, the third was close but they lost by just 12-15. Harry and his partner did very well to finish third.
The final event was the mixed doubles, with Jessi winning her third title. Partnering Smith, the top seeds were unstoppable, winning all their matches in straight games.
