Defensive effort not enough for West

Have your say

Lowestoft & Yarmouth 21 West Norfolk 8

Despite a massive defensive effort, West were unable to overcome a large Lowestoft side on Saturday.

West went into the game with a few changes.

Sam Corlett and Max Rust came back into the squad with Jamie Williamson and Alex Singleton unavailable.

Having been relegated from London North East 2 last season, L&Y were full of powerful runners.

West started well, putting their opponents under pressure, which led to a penalty, converted by Monty Maule to put the visitors 3-0 up.

Lowestoft camped themselves in the West 22 area. West fought valiantly with some tremendous defending from the likes of Sam Greenwood, Dave Harrison and the Rust brothers, Henry and Max. The hosts went over to take a slim 7-3 advantage going into the second half.

The third quarter saw Maule, Ross Biggs and Jake Richardson making half breaks, but the hosts were able to close West down. This pressure told as Lowestoft went over for two extra tries, extending their lead to 21-3 with 20 minutes still to play.

With reinforcements Sam Corlett and Ryan Walker, a break from Maule to the right saw him flick a neat pass back inside to captain Lawrence Savage, who burst over from 15 yards, handing off the attentions of three tacklers.

West next host Wanstead tomorrow, 3pm KO.
