West Norfolk Junior Badminton players, Jessi Bateman and Joe Rolfe, have continued their winning form into the New Year.

Jessi, 13, from Dersingham played in the under 15 silver level competition in Suffolk, winning bronze medals in both the singles and doubles.

In the singles event, she won through her group to reach the semi-finals, where she lost a close match 14-16, 8-15 to the eventual winner.

In the doubles, all pairs played each other in one group, with Jessi and her regular Norwich partner, Caitlin Parfitt, winning two of their matches to finish third.

Most recently Jessi stepped up an age group and played in an U17 bronze level event in Northampton, where she did very well to win bronze medals in singles and doubles against much older opposition.

Joe Rolfe, 14 years old from Downham, also won a bronze in the boy’s singles. With a large entry, they were split into nine groups. Joe won his and was given a bye in the first elimination round to reach the quarter-finals. There he beat Owain Seaton from Northants 21-15 to get to the semis. It was a close match against Herefordshire’s Brandon Adams, but Joe just missed out on a place in the final, losing 18-21.

In the singles, Jessi won all games in her group to reach the semis, where she lost a hard fought match by 15-21.

In the doubles, Jessi and Caitlin won two of their three matches in the group stage, and as semi-finals were not played, the runners-up from the two groups were given bronze medals.

Joe and his regular partner James Salter won the gold medals in doubles at an under 17 tournament in Hertfordshire. After winning their group, they won both their quarter-final 21-11, semi-final 21-18 and a surprisingly easy final by 21-13.

They also won silver medals in Essex at the end of the year.

Winning all their games in the group stage, they easily won their semi-final 21-9, only to miss out in the final by just 15-21 to a Surrey/Sussex pair. Joe also narrowly missed out on the bronze medal in the singles, losing 20-22 in the quarters.
